Instagram comment to DM automation in GoHighLevel (my exact setup)
Heads up: the trial buttons on this page use my affiliate link. If you sign up through it I get a commission. It doesn't cost you more.
To set up Instagram comment to DM automation in GoHighLevel, connect the Instagram professional account, create a workflow with the Instagram Comment(s) On A Post trigger, pick the post and the keyword, then add the Instagram Interactive Messenger action with the reply type set to Reply to Comment via DM. Add Reply In Comments so the comment gets a public "check your DMs", publish, and test it from another account.
This is running on my own Instagram right now. Someone comments on one of my videos, my DM agent messages them asking if they want to start an agency or buy my services, and an AI agent takes the conversation from there, selling for me 24/7. Below is the build, the Meta rules that break most people's setups, what it costs, and how to sell it to a local business.
The video version
Short version
- 01Trigger: Instagram Comment(s) On A Post, with the post picked and a Contains Phrase or Exact Match keyword. Action: Instagram Interactive Messenger, Reply to Comment via DM.
- 02A comment does not open Meta's 24-hour DM window. You get one private reply to the comment, sent within 7 days. Get them to reply, and then you can keep messaging for 24 hours.
- 03That's why my DMs ask a question first ("start an agency or buy services?", "reply yes"). Their answer opens the conversation and the AI agent takes over.
- 04The workflow itself is in every plan. The AI agent in the DMs is Conversation AI: pay per use on tokens, or $50 a month for 1,000 responses, or $97 a month unlimited with fair use, per sub-account.
How to set it up, step by step
- 01
Connect the Instagram account
The account has to be a Business or Creator account, personal ones aren't supported. For comment automation HighLevel says to link Instagram to the Facebook business page, then go to Settings > Integrations and connect the Facebook & Instagram card. You need Admin or Editor access on the page. Since October 2026, connecting Facebook once in Integrations also makes the page and its linked Instagram show up in Social Planner.
- 02
Create the workflow and add the comment trigger
Automations > Workflows > Create Workflow. Add Trigger > Facebook/Instagram Events > Instagram Comment(s) On A Post. Set Page Is first (every other filter depends on it), then Post Type: Published Post to pick from a list, or Custom Post to paste the post URL. Then Post Is.
- 03
Set the keyword
Add Contains Phrase or Exact Match. Contains Phrase fires if the comment includes your word anywhere, so "GUIDE" also catches "guide please". Exact Match only fires when the whole comment is the word. I'd use Contains Phrase and add a few spellings. Turn on Track First Level Comments Only so replies inside a thread don't fire it.
- 04
Reply to the comment publicly
Actions > Communication > Reply In Comments. Add up to 10 replies like "sent you a DM" and HighLevel picks one at random, so it doesn't look like the same bot line on every comment. You can toggle it to like the comment too. The trigger ignores comments posted by the workflow, so this won't loop.
- 05
Send the DM
Actions > Communication > Instagram Interactive Messenger. Reply Type: Reply to Comment via DM. Write a short first message with one question. Add up to 3 buttons (open website, call number, or perform actions) or quick replies like Yes and No. Every button or quick reply makes its own branch. If the action is greyed out, your trigger isn't an Instagram trigger.
- 06
Build the branches and the wait step
Each messenger action needs a wait, 1 minute by default. If they don't tap anything in that time they go down the Default Timeout branch. Inside the Yes branch add another Interactive Messenger with Reply Type set to Reply to DM, and send the link, the checklist or the booking calendar. Tag the contact so you know which post they came from.
- 07
Hand the conversation to an AI agent (optional)
Build a Conversation AI agent in AI Agents > Conversation AI, give it the prompt and knowledge base, and turn on the Instagram channel in Auto-Pilot. Tell it in the prompt what your first DM asked, so when someone just says "yes" it knows what they mean. The booking setup is in Build an AI appointment setter and training it is in Train Conversation AI.
- 08
Publish and test from a second account
Save, publish, then comment the keyword on the post from a different Instagram account. Check the DM arrives, the buttons branch correctly and the contact shows up in Contacts with the tag.
My exact setup
From the second a video of mine goes out, if somebody comments on it, my Instagram DM agent reaches out with something like: "Hey, saw you were interested in Hamza's video. Are you looking to start an agency or are you looking to buy his services?" Depending on the answer, it sends people to different offers, different websites, different programs. Then there's an AI agent in my Instagram DMs that keeps the conversation going.
For specific videos I go narrower. On my hair salon automation video, the DM says glad you're interested, comment yes if you want it, and when they say yes it sends them the link to the tutorial. I've got dozens of these workflows running 24/7 behind the scenes, and every one of those conversations lands in the Conversations tab next to my SMS, email and Facebook messages, so I can see exactly what the AI said.
One thing I learned building these for influencers: tell the AI what the first message was. It can't see the automated DM the workflow sent, so if someone replies "yes" with no context it gets confused. Put the first question in the prompt and it picks up the conversation properly.
Meta's 24-hour rule and the 7-day window
This is what breaks most setups. A comment does not open Instagram's 24-hour messaging window. What it gives you is one private reply to that comment, and HighLevel's docs say it has to go out within 7 days or delivery fails.
So the first Interactive Messenger action is Reply to Comment via DM, and every one after it is Reply to DM. Reply to DM only sends if there's been a conversation in the last 24 hours. If the person never answers your first DM, the follow-up messages in the Default Timeout branch won't send either.
That's the real reason my first DM is a question. The moment they reply, the 24-hour window opens and you, the workflow or the AI agent can keep talking. The plain Instagram DM action has the same limit, which is why HighLevel recommends Interactive Messenger for comment flows.
| Situation | What you can send |
|---|---|
| They commented, no reply yet | One Reply to Comment via DM, within 7 days |
| They replied to your DM | Reply to DM messages for 24 hours from their last message |
| They never replied | Nothing more by DM, the timeout branch can't message them |
| They submitted an Instagram lead form only | Doesn't open the DM window on its own |

How much does Instagram DM automation cost in GoHighLevel?
The comment trigger, Reply In Comments and Interactive Messenger are workflow features, so the keyword to DM part comes with your HighLevel plan, which starts at $97 a month. I'm on the $497 plan and recommend the $297 Unlimited plan if you want to white label it for clients.
The AI agent answering the DMs is Conversation AI, and that's billed. Without an AI Employee plan it's pay per use on tokens, so cost depends on the model and how long the conversation runs. HighLevel's own example of 100,000 input and 25,000 output tokens on GPT 5 comes to $0.375. Or put the sub-account on AI Employee Growth at $50 a month for 1,000 agent responses, or Unlimited at $97 a month with fair use. The $20 Starter AI plan doesn't include Conversation AI.
When an allowance runs out the bot pauses by default. Turn on Extra Usage in AI Suite if you want it to keep going at pay-per-use rates.
| Part | Price |
|---|---|
| Comment trigger, comment reply, Interactive Messenger | Included in the HighLevel plan ($97, $297 or $497 a month) |
| Conversation AI, pay per use | Token based, varies by model and conversation length |
| AI Employee Growth | $50/month per sub-account, 1,000 agent responses |
| AI Employee Unlimited | $97/month per sub-account, fair use |

GoHighLevel vs ManyChat for Instagram
ManyChat is a dedicated Instagram and Messenger tool, and if all you need is comment to DM for your own account, it's cheaper. As of October 2026 its Pro plan is $39 a month billed monthly, or $29 a month billed annually, for up to 2,500 active contacts, and the free plan covers 25 active contacts a month. HighLevel starts at $97.
Where HighLevel wins is what happens after the DM. The commenter becomes a contact in a real CRM, the conversation sits in the same inbox as SMS, email and calls, and the workflow can book them on a calendar, text them, add them to a pipeline and start the follow-ups. The money is made in the follow-ups. For a client, you'd need ManyChat plus a CRM plus a booking tool plus something to connect them, and with HighLevel it's one sub-account you can put your own brand on.
So: one creator who only wants to send a link, ManyChat is fine. An agency setting this up for local businesses, I'd use HighLevel.
| What you get | GoHighLevel | ManyChat |
|---|---|---|
| Price | From $97/month | Pro $39/month monthly or $29/month annual, 2,500 active contacts |
| Comment to DM | Yes, in workflows | Yes |
| CRM, calendar, SMS, email | Built in | Not the focus, you connect other tools |

How to sell Instagram comment to DM to a local business
Pick a business that already posts and gets comments, like a med spa or a salon. Scroll their posts. If people are commenting "price?" or "do you have availability?" and nobody answered, that's your opening.
Build the demo on your own account first. Post something with "comment BOOK" in the caption, then show them on your phone: comment goes in, DM comes back with a booking button, the contact lands in the CRM with a tag. Seeing it work is what sells it.
For them the setup is a workflow per campaign: comment PRICE gets the price list, comment BOOK gets the calendar, and Conversation AI answers the follow-up questions. Put it in their own sub-account. You could build this for a local business and charge a setup fee plus a monthly fee you set, because new posts need new workflows and someone has to keep the AI's knowledge base current. It also pairs well with an AI receptionist on the phones (see Build an AI voice agent), which is usually the first thing I build for a local business.
Why isn't my comment to DM automation working?
Check in this order: the account is Business or Creator and linked to the Facebook page, the workflow is published, Page Is and Post Is point at the right post, the keyword filter matches what people actually type, and you're testing from a second account.
If the first DM sends but the follow-ups don't, it's the 24-hour rule: the person never replied, so Reply to DM has nothing to reply to. If the Interactive Messenger action is greyed out, the workflow trigger isn't Instagram Comment(s) On A Post or Customer Replied on Instagram.

FAQ
Can comment-to-DM get my Instagram account restricted?
It can if it looks like spam. In 2026 some agency owners on r/gohighlevel reported Instagram accounts getting restricted after running comment-to-DM, and Meta doesn't publish a safe volume. Keep the first DM to one reply per comment, make it ask a question instead of dropping a link, and only trigger on a keyword people chose to type.
Can GoHighLevel auto DM people who comment on Instagram?
Yes. Use the Instagram Comment(s) On A Post workflow trigger with the Instagram Interactive Messenger action set to Reply to Comment via DM. It sends a private message to anyone whose comment matches your keyword.
Does it work on all my posts or one post?
You pick. Set Post Type to Published Post and choose a post from the list, or Custom Post and paste a URL. I'd do one workflow per post or campaign so the tags and reporting stay clean.
Why does the first DM send but nothing after it?
Instagram only lets you send one private reply to a comment until the person answers. Once they reply, you have 24 hours from their last message. Ask a question in the first DM so they have a reason to reply.
Can AI reply to Instagram DMs in GoHighLevel?
Yes. Conversation AI works on Instagram DMs in Auto-Pilot mode. It's billed per use on tokens, or included in the AI Employee Growth ($50 a month, 1,000 responses) and Unlimited ($97 a month) plans, as of October 2026.
Do I need a Facebook page to automate Instagram DMs?
For comment automation, HighLevel's guide says to link the Instagram Business account to the Facebook page and connect it under Settings > Integrations. Direct Instagram login without a page is mainly for posting from Social Planner.
Will deleting a comment stop the automation?
No. The trigger fires as soon as the comment is posted, so the workflow keeps running even if the comment is deleted afterwards.
Does this work for Facebook comments too?
Yes, with the separate Facebook Comment(s) On A Post trigger and the Facebook Interactive Messenger action. The setup is the same.

What changed in October 2026: comments in Conversations
HighLevel shipped Social Comments in Conversations on October 26, 2026. Facebook, Instagram and TikTok comments now show up in the Team Inbox with the post they were left on, every new commenter is saved as a contact, and you can reply publicly or send a DM from the same screen. You can also set buying-intent keywords like "price" or "book" to find the hot ones.
The catch: it only syncs comments on posts published through Social Planner. If the business posts straight from the Instagram app, those comments won't appear. Turn it on in Agency Settings > Social Comments, then in the sub-account at Marketing > Social Planner > Settings > Comments. It's a nice inbox for a human to work. The workflow trigger above is still what does the automatic DM.
