How to build an AI voice agent in GoHighLevel (2026, step by step)
Heads up: the trial buttons on this page use my affiliate link. If you sign up through it I get a commission. It doesn't cost you more.
To build an AI voice agent in GoHighLevel, go to AI Agents, then Voice AI, click Create Agent, write the prompt, pick a voice, add the business's knowledge base and a booking action, test it with a web call, then assign a phone number on the Deploy tab. It answers calls 24/7, books appointments into the calendar and updates the contact while it talks.
Voice agents are half of what I sell, and an AI receptionist is usually the first thing I build for a local business. Below is the full build in the 2026 version of the builder, the settings I change on every agent, and what it actually costs to run, because most guides out there are on the old interface or have the pricing wrong.
The video version
Short version
- 01Voice AI only works with LC Phone or Twilio numbers, and HighLevel says not to put it on your default account number. I give clients a separate AI line.
- 02The prompt is most of the work. Tell it who it is, what it can and can't say, when to book, when to transfer, and not to guess.
- 03Test with a web call in the browser, but transfers don't run in web calls, so test those with a real phone call.
- 04Cost: pay per minute by default (about 10 to 20 cents a minute on the newer voice models), or $50 a month for 100 minutes, or $97 a month unlimited with fair use. Phone charges are extra.
How to build it, step by step
- 01
Open the builder
In the client's sub-account go to AI Agents > Voice AI > Agent List and click + Create Agent. Pick Create Custom Agent for the full builder (or a marketplace template, or the flow-based builder). If you don't see Voice AI, the user needs the "View & Manage Voice AI Agents" permission.
- 02
Name it, pick a voice, model and language
Set the welcome message and whether the agent or the caller speaks first. Pick the voice you'd actually want answering the phone. I listen to a few and go with one of the highest rated.
- 03
Write the prompt
Who it is, the business, the tone, what to collect, what it can answer, what it must not say, when to book, when to transfer, how to end the call. Mine start like: "You're the assistant for an established law firm. Sound professional and respectful. Answer questions and book appointments." Then add: if you don't know, don't guess, offer to transfer.
- 04
Add the knowledge base
Open Knowledge Base and dump everything about the business into it: website, services, prices, hours, locations, policies, FAQs. Then tell the agent when to search it.
- 05
Add actions
Actions > + New Action. Appointment Booking (connect a HighLevel calendar), Call Transfer to a human number, Send SMS, Update Contact Field, Trigger a Workflow (see GoHighLevel workflows), a custom webhook, or Agent Transfer to another AI agent.
- 06
Tune the advanced settings
Turn on Show advanced settings. This is the stuff that looks like fluff and is actually the difference between natural and robotic. My settings are below.
- 07
Test it
Use Web Call in the test panel to call it from your browser. Read the transcript, fix the prompt, call again. Then do a real phone call to test transfers.
- 08
Deploy it
On the Deploy tab pick the number (or buy one there), choose Answer Calls Directly or Use as Backup, and set working hours: all hours, or only after hours if the business has a front desk during the day.
The settings I change on every voice agent
The prompt is on the left. The part most people skip is everything on the right, which looks like fluff but is what stops the awkward pauses.
| Setting | What I use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Response speed | Fastest (1), dynamic response on | Long gaps before it answers are the biggest giveaway |
| Interruption sensitivity | 0.5 | So an "mhm" or "um" from the caller doesn't make it stop mid-sentence |
| Backchanneling | On, with custom filler words | Little "yeah" and "right" sounds while the caller talks |
| Pronunciation dictionary | Business name, staff names, city | So it says the names the way locals do |
| Background sound | Call center | Dead silence behind a voice sounds off |

Which phone number should the agent use?
Voice AI only works on LC Phone or Twilio numbers. HighLevel's own docs say don't assign your default account number to the agent, and don't put call forwarding on the agent's number.
I prefer giving the business a new number that's just their AI line, and keeping it separate. You can also port their existing number in if they want one number for everything.
One gotcha: if the number forwards somewhere first and that rings through to voicemail, HighLevel marks the call completed and the agent never answers. Keep the inbound timeout short, 1 to 3 seconds.
Can it book appointments?
Yes. Add the Appointment Booking action and connect a HighLevel calendar. It respects the calendar's availability, buffers and minimum notice, and asks for anything it's missing, like an email. You can connect several calendars and let it pick by what the caller wants, for example a consult calendar and a treatment calendar.
Working hours for the agent and the calendar's availability are separate settings, so check both.
Call transfer vs agent transfer
If the agent gets a question it can't answer, transfer it to a human. That's Call Transfer, and it needs a phone number. Agent Transfer hands the caller to another AI agent on the same call, for example a booking agent and a billing agent, up to three destinations.
How much does a GoHighLevel AI voice agent cost?
Without an AI plan it's pay per use. The newer speech-to-speech models cost $0.10 to $0.20 a minute all in. The classic setup is $0.045 a minute for the voice engine plus the voice ($0.015 to $0.17 a minute depending on provider) plus the AI model's tokens. HighLevel's own example: 10 minutes with OpenAI's voice comes to $0.60 before tokens and phone charges.
Or put the sub-account on an AI Employee plan. Growth is $50 a month and includes 100 voice minutes. Unlimited is $97 a month, unlimited with fair use. The $20 Starter AI plan doesn't include Voice AI. Phone charges are separate on every plan.
Heads up: when an allowance runs out, the agent pauses by default. Turn on Extra Usage in AI Suite if you want it to keep going at pay-per-use rates. Usage rates are in Usage fees.
| Option | Price | Voice AI included |
|---|---|---|
| Pay per use | $0.10 to $0.20/min (speech-to-speech) | Billed by the minute |
| AI Employee Growth | $50/month per sub-account | 100 minutes a month |
| AI Employee Unlimited | $97/month per sub-account | Unlimited, fair use |
| AI Employee Starter | $20/month | Not included |

Can it make outbound calls?
Yes, but only from a workflow, with the Voice AI Outbound Call action. You accept HighLevel's outbound terms and verify the business first. Limits as of October 2026: up to 5,000 calls per location per day, each number once a day and 14 times in 14 days, only 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the contact's timezone, same country only.
HighLevel doesn't check if you have consent to call someone. That's on you and the business, so only call people who opted in.
How to sell an AI receptionist to a local business
Build it first. Make a demo for the type of business you're going after, then call the business after hours. If nobody picks up, you open with that: their calls are going to voicemail right now, and here's what answering them looks like.
Offer the after-hours version if they have a front desk, so it only turns on after close. You could build this for a med spa, a plumber or a law firm and charge a setup fee plus a monthly fee you set, and people do. The agent keeps answering every month, which is why it's a monthly service. My full step-by-step for running this as an agency is in Start an AI automation agency.
Why isn't my voice agent answering calls?
Check in this order: the number is assigned on the Deploy tab, working hours cover the time you called, the routing mode (Answer Directly vs Use as Backup), call forwarding on the number, and the inbound timeout. If a call reaches voicemail first, HighLevel counts it as done and the agent never picks up.

FAQ
What is an AI voice agent?
Software that talks on the phone. It hears the caller, decides what to say with an AI model and speaks back. In GoHighLevel it can also book appointments, update the contact, send texts and trigger workflows during or after the call.
Can I test a GoHighLevel voice agent without a phone number?
Yes. Use Web Call in the builder's test panel to call it from your browser. It covers the prompt, knowledge base answers and most actions, but not Call Transfer, which needs a real phone call.
Can I use my existing business phone number?
Voice AI works on LC Phone or Twilio numbers, so you'd port the number in or use a new one. HighLevel says not to use your default account number for the agent. I usually give the business a separate AI line.
Can the AI voice agent transfer calls to a human?
Yes. The Call Transfer action sends the caller to a phone number. Agent Transfer can hand off to up to three other AI agents instead.
Does GoHighLevel Voice AI work after hours only?
It can. On the Deploy tab set custom working hours, for example only after the business closes, or set it as a backup that answers when nobody else does.
How long is the prompt allowed to be?
HighLevel caps agent prompts at 15,000 tokens, which is far more than most receptionists need.
